Apex Legends Season 29 introduces Axle and overclocked action

Meet new Legend Axle, explore her abilities, and see all gameplay updates shaping the competitive meta

May 7, 2026

There’s a moment in Apex Legends where everything clicks. The push is timed perfectly. The movement is fluid. The fight is won not just by aim, but by instinct, speed, and control.

Season 29: Overclocked is built for those moments.

It’s a season about momentum. About pushing faster, harder, and farther than ever before. And at the center of it all is a new Legend who embodies that philosophy–Axle–the newest addition to the roster since Sparrow joined the Apex Games a year ago.

This, along with other key changes to the game, will surely delight and surprise players and fans of all skill levels across the globe as Season 29 marks a shift toward speed-driven competitive design, where movement and map mastery define the meta.

Let’s get into it!

“Let’s just say you don’t want to be in her way.”

Built for speed, driven by something deeper

Ashley Reed, Lead Writer at Apex Legends, describes Axle as a force that players will feel the moment she enters the arena.

“Let’s just say you don’t want to be in her way,” says Ashley. “Axle is a hyper-competitive, body-modded motorcycle racer who is always pushing herself beyond her limits. She’s driven and no nonsense. Her focused intensity is going to intimidate a lot of people in the arena, and that ferocity never lets up.”

That intensity is shaped by everything she’s been through–responses to tragedies and trauma she has experienced throughout her life.

“Axle, maybe not shocking, has experienced a lot of tumultuous things in her life,” says Ashley. “She’s gone through a lot of grief, though she doesn’t let it show.”

As such, Axle doesn’t see her injuries or replacements of entire body parts as setbacks. They’re trophies.

And this backstory translates into how Axle plays and interacts on the battlefield.

“I love how her kit translates map knowledge into creative, high-speed playmaking. She really does transform areas into mini racetracks.”

Axle abilities explained:

For John Larson, Legend Designer at Respawn and the lead on Axle, the goal was simple: create a Legend built entirely around movement.

“Start to finish, Axle is all about transforming the battlefield into a racetrack,” says John. “We challenged ourselves to add a movement legend that makes an impression on players of all skill bands.”

Primarily, Axle’s kit rewards players who stay in motion and think ahead.

“Her passive, Drift, gives her increased speed and lateral control when sliding,” says John, “This extra sliding agility can be the difference between life and death. The Nitro Gate Tactical lets others get in on the sliding fun. But keep in mind, if you’re not thoughtful about placement, you could end up creating a fast lane for your enemies.”

Axle’s Ultimate, Kickstart gives our Combat Racer an autonomous aggressor. Upon activating the ult, Axle fires out an enemy-seeking drone from the housing on her leg that chases down opponents and blasts them up into the air on impact.

“Conceptually, she’s sort of like an inverse Horizon,” says John. “Axle is a master of terrain with this lateral mobility. I love how her kit translates map knowledge into creative, high-speed playmaking. She really does transform areas into mini racetracks. I think in practice she plays kind of like a Maggie-Octane hybrid. She’s got that solo playmaking potential. Offers some teamwide mobility and then has this offensive ult that can create a strong opening or secure an advantage after trading some damage.”

For players who thrive on speed and control, she opens up entirely new ways to win. Which is a great asset to have on any squad, as this season aims to deliver its best competitive experience yet.

“Our work this year is focused on delivering the best competitive Apex experience yet.”

What’s new in Season 29: Overclocked aims to deliver Apex Legends best competitive experience

Season 29 is not just about a new Legend. It’s about continuing to refine and evolve Apex Legends into the best version it can be, and in Overclocked, there is a particularly strong focus on the competitive experience.

“Our work this year is focused on delivering the best competitive Apex experience yet. And the foundation of that experience is celebrating competition,,” says Evan Nikolich, Design Director. “Apex is ever evolving, and giving our players more ways to compete and experiment is at the heart of this competitive experience.”

With this in mind, Evan says the team has worked on several changes to how the game is played, including updates to player respawn, healing and health bars, audio, to name a few.

“Respawn at deathbox is coming in Season 29, and this is going to allow squads to revive their teammates directly from the deathbox and save them a trip to the nearest respawn beacon,” says Evan. “When a squad loses a member but wins the fight, we want to make sure that the winning squad feels adequately rewarded and has an opportunity to reset, and not go off on this big long quest where you have to get the banner or craft it and then find the respawn beacon. This deathbox respawn gets your whole team back into the action as soon as you can once you have control over the battlefield.”

In the same vein of making the game feel more fluid and engaging, the team is improving visibility and ease of use when it comes to healing and health bars.

“We’re adding an option called Chain Healing, where players can queue up additional and different healing items they’re looking to use in sequence,” says Evan. “This will automatically apply them one after the other in a fluid string, so you can keep your focus on the action and holding those angles.

These changes, alongside improvements to health bars and audio, aim to make every moment feel smoother, faster, and charge that competitive spirit.

"As we work towards our goal of making Apex the best competitive game it can be, transparency with our players is critical,” says Evan. “Last season we gave the community a look at this year’s Roadmap with a commitment to share regular updates. Today, we’re excited to share an updated Roadmap where we are committing to deliver significant Ranked updates based on player feedback. Be sure to check out our Game Updates Blog post when it goes live on April 28th for more information."
